Methodology

  • The power of the system is the discharge power in MW AC that is capable of being continuously discharged at the point of interconnection.

  • Similarly, the energy rating is provided as the MWh AC that can be delivered to the grid at the point of interconnection.

  • Wherever possible, the map shows the precise location of the physical system, but this information is not available for all projects. If the precise latitude and longitude of a project are not available publicly, coordinates of the city or county are used in lieu. If you know a more accurate location of a project than what is shown, please use our Submit a Correction form to let us know!

  • We have considered a single "Project" to mean any BESS or collection of multiple BESS with the same ownership, discharging at the same substation, even if that project was financed separately or connected under a separate interconnection agreement.

  • This is a community-led and public-based effort - we have done our best to present the information based on the best available data. Please contribute to make the database stronger and more accurate using the "Submit a Correction" or "Inquiry" forms.

  • The rankings are based on power (MW) because this is the most relevant value of energy storage to the grid: the ability to provide instantaneous power to satisfy demand. If you want to sort the list by Energy, you can do so in the List view.

  • The satellite data is updated periodically, and may not show the physical battery installation even if the coordinates of the site are correct. We recommend checking the point on Google Earth, which may have more accurate satellite data then the MapBox satellite view which is used here.
